“The greatest polluting element in the earth’s environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields… … All life pulsates in time to the Earth and our artificial fields cause abnormal reactions in all organisms… Increasing electropollution could set in motion irreversible changes leading to our extinction.”

Dr Robert O Becker Surgeon, Researcher and Author of Electromagnetism and Life, The Body Electric. and Cross Currents. The Promise of Electromedicine, the Perils of Electropollution, two times Nobel Prize Nominee

“If I asked you how much more radiation is penetrating your body today compared to ten years ago, is it twice as much, three times as much?  No, it’s a quintillion times more. That’s a one with eighteen zeros      (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) “

Professor Olle Johansson, Karolinska Institute, Sweden

“I’m here with disturbing news about our favorite gadgets: cell phones, tablets, wi-fi, etc. Putting it bluntly, they are damaging the living cells in our bodies and killing many of us prematurely … Before Edison’s lightbulb, there was very little electromagnetic radiation in our environment.  The levels today are very many times higher than natural background levels and are growing rapidly because of all the new devices that emit this radiation.

Dr. Martin Blank  Dept Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University.

Professor Tom Butler, UCC :

On the Clear Evidence of Risks to Children from Smartphone and WiFi Radio Frequency

Wireless radiation and man-made electromagnetic radiation – radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF/EMF) cause harmful biological effects in humans and living things. We are being increasingly exposed to man-made microwave radiation – in our homes, schools, towns, cities, parks, hospitals, from mobile/smart phones, telecommunication masts & antennae (2G, 3G & 4G), WIFI, bluetooth and wireless devices. As well as EMF radiation from power lines and pylons, and dirty electricity from Broadband over Powerlines.  In addition, utility companies are replacing analogue electricity and gas meters with Smart Meters which transmit information using pulsed wireless radiation. Plans are also in place for 5th generation communications (5G) which experts warn will have even more dangerous consequences for  health and the natural environment.

What about Safety Standards?

So-called “safety standards” do exist for radio frequency (RF/EMF) radiation emissions, but these guidelines are not safe. They are based purely on thermal heating effects only for very short periods of time – 6 minutes and 30 minutes., and benefit the industry only.  These standards were set by  ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) in 1998 and updated in 2020.  They do not adhere to the Precautionary Principle and only apply to “thermal effects”, ie heating and shock, despite evidence showing that biological non-thermal effects do occur with exposure to radiation, and at levels thousands of time lower than ICNIRP guideline levels.  Read more about the problems with ICNIRP – a self-appointed closed group, with conflicts of interest who refuse to acknowledge scientific studies showing clear evidence of cancer and the  2011 classification of wireless radiation as a Group 2B Carcinogen.   Here

What do Scientists and Expert Groups say?

There are already thousands of scientific studies and continuing research showing clear dangers of the damaging effects on our bodies to this radiation, well below ICNIRP guidelines. These studies show the link between RF/EMF exposure and health concerns, including headaches, tinnitus, joint and limb pain, heart palpitations, concentration and memory problems, inflammation, free-radical damage, DNA damage, neural damage, Alzheimer’s, cancers, increase in childhood cancers and brain tumours, and electromagnetic-hypersensitivity (EHS)/microwave sickness.

The BioInitiative Report 2012 informs us that exposure to wireless and electromagnetic radiation causes biological damage at levels far below ICNIRP’s safety standards :

“Very low-level ELF and RF exposures can cause cells to produce stress proteins, meaning that the cell recognizes ELF and RF exposures as harmful. This is another important way in which scientists have documented that ELF and RF exposures can be harmful, and it happens at levels far below the existing public safety standards.” https://bioinitiative.org/conclusions/

The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly issued recommendations in 2011 to all member states of the Council of Europe that they

“reconsider the scientific basis for the present standards on exposure to electromagnetic fields set by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which have serious limitations, and apply ALARA  principles, covering both thermal effects and the athermic or biological effects of electromagnetic emissions or radiation”, as well as reducing children’s exposure to electromagnetic radiation, setting “preventive thresholds for levels of long-term exposure to microwaves, in accordance with the precautionary principle” and informing the public of the potential health risks.  https://assembly.coe.int/nw/xml/XRef/Xref-XML2HTML-en.asp?fileid=17994&

International Doctors’ Appeal Freiburg

In 2002, more than 1,000 doctors signed the Freiburg Appeal calling on support and demanding precaution with regard to wireless radiation.  10 years later, in 2012, with rapidly increasing radiation being introduced in our society, they relaunched this Appeal, calling on physicians, scientists and governments around the world to heed the warnings.

‘Health care professionals worldwide make observations that are consistent with and increasingly confirmed by scientific findings. Adverse effects of electromagnetic fields and the fundamental impairment of biological control mechanisms can occur well below current exposure limits and have been demonstrated, in some instances for decades.’… http://freiburger-appell-2012.info/media/International_Doctors_Appeal_2012_Nov.pdf

International EMF Scientist Appeal

In May 2015 this Appeal, signed by 247 scientists from 42 nations, was sent to the Secretary General of the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk, and to educate the public about health risks.

‘Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plant and animal life’.   https://www.emfscientist.org/

EUROPAEM EMF Guideline 2016 for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of EMF-related health problems and illnesses

“Chronic diseases and illnesses associated with non-specific symptoms are on the rise. In addition to chronic stress in social and work environments, physical and chemical exposures at home, at work, and during leisure activities are causal or contributing environmental stressors that deserve attention by the general practitioner as well as by all other members of the health care community. It seems necessary now to take “new exposures” like electromagnetic fields (EMF) into account. Physicians are increasingly confronted with health problems from unidentified causes. Studies, empirical observations, and patient reports clearly indicate interactions between EMF exposure and health problems. Individual susceptibility and environmental factors are frequently neglected. New wireless technologies and applications have been introduced without any certainty about their health effects, raising new challenges for medicine and society. For instance, the issue of so-called non-thermal effects and potential long-term effects of low-dose exposure were scarcely investigated prior to the introduction of these technologies. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/305689940_EUROPAEM_EMF_Guideline_2016

International Guidelines on Non-Ionising Radiation (IGNIR)

Established in 2017 , IGNIR is an independent organisation, providing scientific advice and guidance on the health and environmental effects of man-made non-ionising radiation.  Its aim is to protect people and the environment from detrimental exposure and gives exposure limit recommendations for day, night and sensitive people.  “Although at present there are no assured safe levels of man-made EM exposure, and studies continue to show harm to living systems at very small exposure values, this guidance aims to help achieve substantial reduction in EM exposure.” IGNIR Website

The EMF Call 2018  Scientists and NGOs Call for Truly Protective Limits for Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (100 kHz to 300 GHz) –

‘ICNIRP’s opinion and guidelines are unscientific and protect industry, not public health. … In order to protect the public and the environment from the known harmful effects from electromagnetic fields (EMF) we ask the United Nations, the World Health Organization and all governments not to accept the ICNIRP guidelines. They are not protective, rather they pose a serious risk to human health and the environment since they allow harmful exposure to the world population, including the most vulnerable, under the unscientific pretext that they are “protective”.’  …   …‘The guidelines do not protect against harmful effects from low-intensity and long-term exposure, such as cancer, reproductive harm, or effects on the nervous system, although these effects are convincingly shown to appear from chronic exposure at intensities below ICNIRP limits.’ https://www.emfcall.org/about/
