In May 2011, the World Health Organisation and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified mobile phone radiation as a Class 2B Carcinogenic, the same category as DDT, chloroform and methylmercury. In June 2011, The Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Health and Children in Ireland issued this warning:

In the last few days, WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as emitted by mobile phones as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This is based on research which has shown that a positive association has been observed between mobile phone use and an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer

We may not truly understand the health affects of mobile phones for many years. However, research does show that using mobile phones affects brain activity. There is general consensus that children are more vulnerable to radiation from mobile phones than adults. Therefore the sensible thing to do is to adopt a precautionary approach rather than wait to have the risks confirmed. Read more here

In May 2017, The National Toxicology Program (USA) under the National Institutes of Health completed the largest-ever animal study on mobile phone radiation and cancer. The results confirm that mobile phone radiation exposure levels within the currently allowable safety limits are the “likely cause” of brain and heart cancers in these animals, according to Dr. John Bucher, Associate Director of the NTP. In Ireland today, there are more mobile phones than inhabitants. Increasingly more people use mobile and smart phones for calls, texting and accessing the internet. In March of 2013, official data from ComReg shows that there were 5,432,182 active mobile phone subscriptions in Ireland, more than the country’s inhabitants.

With mobile phones now using wifi for internet access and the addition of 4G, the levels of wireless microwave radiation has increased considerably over the years since mobile phones were first introduced.

Tips for Safer Mobile Phone Use

When talking on your phone, keep phone as far away from your head and body as possible. Use loudspeaker or and airtube wired headset. Bluetooth is not safe.

Avoid carrying your powered on phone on your body. Smart phones emit radiation constantly even when you are not actively using them. Ideally turn to airplane mode and switch off when carrying.

Avoid using phone/smart device when the signal is weak or when in a moving vehicle (car, bus, train or airplane) and elevators as automatically power increases to emit a maximum amount of radiation,  because the phone repeatedly attempts to connect to each nearest network antenna.

Avoid using phone/smart device in a car, train, bus, airplane or metal vehicle or space (elevator). The metal surroundings reflect the waves inside the vehicle, often increasing your radiation exposure. Your use also passively exposes other persons near you (children, pregnant women, and other adults) to your phone’s electromagnetic radiation fields when you are in an enclosed space.

Children Should Only Use Mobile Phones For Emergencies. Children’s skulls are thinner than adults’ and their brains are still developing. Hence, radiation from cell phones penetrates more deeply into their brains and is likely to cause more damage.

Limit your talk or face time on a mobile phone.  Instead use text.  Ideally use a wired landline for conversations, as corded landlines do not emit radiation.  Cordless DECT phones however are not safe.  Most cordless phone base stations constantly emit microwave radiation regardless of whether or not any connected handset is in use. The cordless phone handsets also emit microwave radiation. Corded landlines have no radiation emissions and are the best choice.

Do not use your Mobile/Smart Phone as an alarm clock. Avoid keeping phone and smart devices in your bedroom.  Ideally turn on airplane mode and switch off for a better, healthier and safer night’s sleep.

Did you know that instructions are given in the user manual of your mobile/smart phone to keep the device at a certain distance from your head and body?  Fine Print Warnings  However even at these “minimum distances” advised in phone manuals, you are not proteced  from nonthermal effects such as sperm damage, damaged brain cells and increased brain cancer risk. These guidelines are set thousands of times too high to protect from these “nonthermal” effects from long term low level cumulative exposures.
